Brownies and In-laws

The in-laws came over. This time, I knew several hours in advance. A day? I think I knew yesterday.

See, they had Fahim’s brother’s prospective bride’s family over for lunch, but because Fahim had to work, we couldn’t come, so Fahim’s mom wanted to bring us some food. How nice of her!

Originally, Fahim misunderstood and thought that his parents were going over to Malli’s prospective in-laws, so we weren’t actually sure that they’d come over because they might not get food to bring us . . . Anyway.

You probably get the drift. 🙂

At any rate, I’ve been wanting to make them brownies for a while, so today, I did.

My sister had asked for my brownie recipe before – she loved it, and she hates the chore of having to try out seven recipes to find the perfect one, so she wanted to settle for my brownie recipe because she loved it so much.

Oh, and the other part of this. A while back, she asked a friend of hers, also coming to the Maldives, to pick up a dress pattern for me. Her friend did, and Kim has since mailed it on to me – a nice princess line. Her friend also wanted the brownie recipe and would consider this perfect brownie recipe as fair trade.

Okay! I know a winning deal when I see one. 🙂 It helps that this friend of Kim’s feels the same way. Fantastic! Both parties are happy!

But. . .

I had a discrepancy in the recipe – the list of ingredients called for 2/3 cup of melted butter, but the instructions only accounted for 1/3 cup of melted butter. Uh oh.

So of course I had to figure out what happened

And today was the day.

It turned out I had a missing line in my instructions I found another copy of the instructions online at essentially the same place I got the original. Well, sort of. See, I got my recipe from a Hershey’s Chocolate Lover’s Cookbook. I found the copy at the Hershey’s website.

Now another comment.

I was going to ice it. I swear, I was going to. I had it all planned out. 🙂

Hershey’s Buttercream Frosting recipe (on the same link as the brownie recipe) isn’t my favoritest. I much prefer my Chocolate Fudge Icing recipe.

And I was happily motoring along, tossing the ingredients into the pot.

Uh oh.

The recipe called for 2 cups sugar and 1/2 cup milk. Not 2 cups milk.

Uh oh. 🙁

I guess I can cook it for forever until it boils off the excess liquid, huh?

Yeah, I dunno if it’ll work, but, um, what else is there to do?

Anyway, this is what I was doing as Fahim’s parents arrive.

Not enough butter to quadruple the recipe, and besides, they’re already here, so I served the brownies naked.

Naked! I say! Naked!

Fahim’s mom’s reaction? You don’t eat too much of this at one time, right? Or make it too often, right?

Uh, no. Too rich.

I make it maybe twice a year. That’s about all we can handle. 🙂 And even then, Fahim eats the vast majority of it.

Oh man, I had a piece, and yep, I’m in chocolate lover’s heaven. Those things are just pure evil.

I sent some home with them so that Malli could give them a try as well. Well, and so they could have more. 🙂 Cuz ya know, one brownie is NOT enough.

On another note, his parents brought us leftovers. Yum! Lotsa lotsa rice (or enough for two normal Sri Lankans) and beef and brinjal curry and I’m not sure what else and some of Fahim’s mom’s famous wattalapam (she makes the most excellent wattalapam ever! Oh man, that stuff is dangerous!) and some cake.

Cool!

With what I made for lunch, I won’t have to cook until. . .

Thursday.
