Columbia crew saw new atmospheric phenomenon

Really?

So, not an airplane? Not a helicopter? Not a weather balloon? Not a hot air balloon?

This atmospheric phenomenon was observed by the Columbia crew during their last voyage before it exploded on 01 February 2003.

So what is the phenomenon they saw? A single frame of the video shows a reddish glow in the hight sky. But no one is really sure of what they saw.
