A typical main-ish road in Sri Lanka

a typical road in Sri LankaThis is the view from just outside the Arpico department store where we go for grocery shopping.

While there are some roads that have two or more lanes for both directions of traffic, those aren’t seen so much outside of the major centres like Colombo. In fact, even the highways I’ve been on looked like this in populated areas.

Note the lack of designated lanes, not that anyone here pays much attention to them. Note also the lack of proper sidewalks for pedestrians – sidewalks do exist, but again, not so much outside of Colombo proper. Also please note how narrow the road is and the wide variety of vehicles that share that space.

Oh yeah, traffic is fun here. Really. 😛
