The History of Chocolate Chip Cookies

Do you wonder where chocolate chip cookies came from? Someone had to be the first person to come up with that idea. What inspired it?

Like many good things, initial discovery can be the result of an accident, like it was with chocolate chip cookies.

Ruth Wakefield ran the Toll House Inn with her husband near Whitman, Massachusetts. One day, she though that she would make chocolate cookies with her butter cookies and a bar of chocolate given to her by Andrew Nestle. It didn’t mix together as well as she hoped it would, but she baked them and served them to her guests anyway.

They turned out so good that they had to be made again. And again.

She made a deal with Nestle that they could put her recipe on the back of their chocolate bar if they supplied her with free chocolate for her cookies at the inn.

And that’s how the Nestle Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe was born.
