I love Sambal Oelik!

I love New Wave Garlic Bread. Love it love it love it love it love it!

Sambal Oelek doesn’t exist here. That makes it potentially difficult to make New Wave Garlic Bread.

So when my sister and her family flew to the Maldives, and stopped in here for a while, I asked my sister to pick up a few things for me. One of them was 2 bottles of Sambal Oelek. For which I am so grateful!

Fahim loves the stuff. He loves it when I cook shrimp with it. He loves it when I cook chicken with it. He loves adding it to his rice. he just loves it.

We opened up bottle number one about a month ago. It’s nearly gone. I’m sad.

Now. The real stuff is from Indonesia, and its ingredients are chillies, vinegar, and salt. Not too complicated. And it’s bright red. We don’t have red peppers here, only dark green. So I’m going to have to settle for dark green Sambal Oelek instead of bright red.

Sigh.

So I hunted on the internet, and I found recipes that included added ginger and garlic, which are both nice, but not what I’m looking for. I found others that included carrots or sugar. Again, quite likely nice, but not the same thing.

I didn’t find even one recipe that has just the three ingredients.

Drat!
