Websites and more Websites

I’ve been working on my http://srilanka.laurieashton.com website lately, which you can find here.

Heh heh heh heh.

I laugh because . . . Okay, do I really have to explain myself?

Really?

I’m working on redesigning it.

Oh heck, who am I kidding? I’m working on designing it.

When I started this blog back in August, I had no time then to design anything else to go along with the blog. I figured that my readers, most of whom know me or Fahim already, cared more about hearing that

I actually got married

I moved to another country

my cats were still alive

I was still alive

Fahim wasn’t beating me and locking me in the house for hours on end

I wasn’t worried about the aesthetics then – not quite so important. Well, now that life has settled down and I’ve settled in, I have a little more time to fuss around with things like designing the rest of the web pages that I wanted to go along with the blog. So that’s what I started doing today.

I also have less of an excuse for putting it off.

Because we live in Sri Lanka, the land of the slow internet connection, I have to be much more conscious of overloading my pages with too many graphics. You in North America – or even Japan, for that matter – with the fast internet connection speeds won’t be bothered a bit by loads of graphics. But here. . . Well, I just have to pay attention to things like that.

My brother Tony, the other computer geek in my life, designed all his pages with no or low graphics specifically so they’ll load fast. Well, yeah, it makes sense.

But I don’t want my pages to be as utilitarian as that. I want them to have a little something in the way of looking nice, but I don’t want to go overboard either. So I started with a template and made a bunch of changes and came up with something that I think looks okay but at the same time isn’t a bandwidth pig.

The Sri Lankans in the crowd will no doubt appreciate this. Along with anyone else who has a slow connection.

I’ve been talking about adding recipes on the site. It’s being done. Some, not many. I’ll actually have to dig deep into the recesses of my brain and previous blog entries to dig up some of the recipes. Others? Well, what can I say? I haven’t invented them yet . . .

I also have a few other things to add, including a little bit of history on Sri Lanka along with a map so you get a general idea of things. You know. And of course the required FAQ. Couldn’t have a website without an FAQ, now can we?

Right.
