NaNoWriMo officially starts November 1st. NaNoWriMo, for the uninformed, is National Novel Writing Month. It’s a challenge to write 50,000 words towards a novel in one month. That’s 1,667 words a day.
It’s doable – I’ve done it myself a few times – but especially for those new to writing, it can be challenging. But it can also be a lot of fun, especially when done in the company of over a hundred thousand people from all over the world.
This year, I’m not doing NaNoWriMo. I’m not up for NaNoWriMo and all that it entails in my life.
Instead, I’m doing things differently this year. I’m planning on writing flash fiction – FFWriMo (Flash Fiction Writing Month). Not necessarily every day, although I’ll try, but as often as I can.
The reason I’m planning on doing flash fiction? It gets the creativity going. It’s still story telling, it’s still having fun with characters and setting. It’s still playing in the story telling arena. But it doesn’t have the same level of commitment as writing a novel – it’s easier and more what I need right now. And I can potentially knock off a completed story in an hour or so.
Besides, it’s fun.
So. What about you? Are you doing NaNoWriMo or do you want to join me in FFWriMo (Flash Fiction Writing Month)?

This is also where I add that I’m planning on posting flash fiction writing prompts every day in November. If you’ve got great ideas for writing prompts, please email them to me at laurie at laurie ashton dot com.
I’d love it if you played along…
