    Works In Process

    • Posted by Laurie Ashton on April 16th, 2008 filed in Uncategorized

I write primary science fiction, but also some fantasy, primarily novels, although also some shorter works, primary flash fiction. Here are blurbs about each of the novels I’m currently working on. "Working on" could mean anything from bits and pieces written to the full plot written out to a completed first draft to in editing.

    —–

    The Resistance (formerly called Placidia).

Khara, a student at the local university, comes into contact with refugees aboard a spaceship and unwittingly invites them to her home planet, unaware of the trouble it’ll cause the people of her planet.

Status: Science Fiction. First draft completed, but since it’s also the first novel I ever wrote, it shows. It needs to be completely re-plotted and re-written. Excerpt.

    —–

Soj Yar’s War. Science fiction. A prequel of sorts to The Resistance.

A man, during his research, discovers the true origin of his people.

Status: Various excerpts written, notes detailed, vague plot outline done. Excerpt.

    —–

The Twin. Science Fiction. Takes place in the same world as The Resistance and Soj Yar’s War, but many years later. In truth, I’ve got at least a dozen novel-length stories set in this world in various stages of plotting.

Status: Several scenes written and the story vaguely plotted. Started writing this before The Resistance, but then realized that the other story had to come first, so shelved it in favour of The Resistance. Excerpt.

    —–

Flores. Not sure yet if it’s science fiction or fantasy - not sufficiently developed to tell yet.

A young woman learns of a plot by a neighboring village to destroy her village, and she will do anything to stop it from happening.

Status: Exists as several scenes and notes on the culture plus some plotting. The resolution, which I don’t have figured out, will tell me if it’s science fiction or fantasy. Excerpt.

    —–

    Black Light. Science fiction.

A woman inherits a watch that takes her to other worlds - or does she?

Status: First draft completed, but needs to be re-plotted and re-written. Excerpt.

    —–

Children of the Dome. Science fiction.

Children, trapped inside a bombed mall, find a way outside to an unfamiliar world.

Status: First draft not complete. Completely plotted in the detail that my brain requires. Just needs me to sit down and finish writing the thing. Excerpt.

    —–

Djinn Rummy (formerly called New United Earth). Science fiction.

A corporate spy, intent on infiltrating a technologically superior world, discovers he isn’t who he thought he was.

Status: First draft about half written. I stalled out when I realized it needs to be re-plotted and re-written - it doesn’t work as it stands. Parts are salvageable, but so much needs to be redone that those parts will be few. I think. :) Excerpt.

    —–

Basement of the Universe. Science fiction.

A man searches for his missing wife, only to find a way to disappear himself to a strange place.

Status: First draft finished. Currently in editing hell. Yes, that’s officially what it’s called. :) Early version of an excerpt. Revised excerpt (which still needs further revisions…)

    —–

    Stranded. Science Fiction.

A group of people, heading towards the Gathering of all the families, go through an unstable Nexus point into an uncharted region of space where they discover their ancient roots, lost in the passages of time until now.

Status: Rough plotting, but needs a seriously detailed plot outline. Have a few scenes written, but nothing more. Excerpt.

    —–

    Shards. Fantasy (magical realism).

A girl and a boy learn forbidden magic, not realizing what they might unleash in the process.

Status: Started writing it during NaNoWriMo 2007 and got about 2/5ish of the first draft done (projected to be about 120,000 to 140,000 when done). Need to finish some much-needed world building and then complete the detailed plotting that I so desperately need. Excerpt.
