I’ve been considering moving to MT4 – I’m currently using MovableType 3. I installed MT4 on my other domain and set up a test blog. You know, the rational thing to do before converting over – test the thing out and see how it works.
Unfortunately, I had problems. I couldn’t create or edit entries, pages, the template, and so on. If something was supposed to be createable or editable, I couldn’t do it.
I wondered if it was a Java problem, but no, that’s enabled. I Googled and found a bunch of posts on the Six Apart forums, but none of those suggestions worked.
I even tried it in Internet Explorer 6, and that didn’t work, either.
Finally, Fahim tried it on his computer – it’s worthwhile to see if it’s my installation or something else. Using FireFox 3 and Internet Explorer 7, he had no problems. Not the installation, then, but something on my computer.
I tried disabling my FireFox extensions, but that didn’t help, either. So eventually, I created a new FireFox profile, and Voila! It works! I reinstalled my extensions, and it still worked. It looks to me like my FireFox profile was corrupted – this happens sometimes, so not really a huge surprise.
I still have no idea why I can’t create or edit anything through Internet Explorer 6, but since that’s just an infrequently-used browser, I don’t care except due to curiosity.
Of course, I’m not done experimenting – I only just got it working today. I still need to see how the template with widgets works and if it’s as easy at MT4 claims. I hope it is.
All in the hopes of having a better site design…

MT4 (ver 4.01 commercial edition) has problems and keeps crashing our servers. The folks at MT are no help at all.
Oh lovely.
I mean, I knew they weren’t very helpful – the problems I had that I searched for on Six Apart’s forums had virtually no suggestions, and it sure didn’t look like there was a lot of concern about those problems coming from Six Apart, but I was hoping it was just that those problems were unusual, rare, and not duplicatable.
I’m using MT4 (ver 4.01 personal edition). It hasn’t crashed our server yet. I hope it never does.
