Story Length

I’ve been writing some shorter manuscripts lately and, in the course of things, wondered about manuscript format for short stories, for example. But then, that led me to wondering about technical details like word count guidelines for the various lengths of stories…

You know, cuz I wander around quite a bit. In my mind and on the internet. :D

So, in the course of doing research, this is the general idea… Keep in mind that many people disagree on what length constitutes any given category, so whether flash fiction, for example, is under 500 words or under 1000, will depend on who you’re talking to. It can vary by country and by genre. :)

Under 100 words – Micro Fiction
100 words exactly – Drabble
Under 1,000 words – Flash Fiction
Under 2,000 – Short Short
2,000-10,000 words – Short Story
7,500-20,000 words – Novelette
20,000-40,000 words – Novella
40,000 words and up – Novel
110,00 words and up – Epic
