Mad Scientist Matt, commenting over at Dawno’s blog, said, in reference to the top twenty worst agents list:
I think I’m going to start a time-release Googlebomb on my blog, now that I’ve had a chance to ponder things. Each week I will feature a new agent on the list and some of the lowlights of their career.
I think he’s got a great idea. Fantastic idea, as a matter of fact. Brilliant brain wave.
More so, this could become a new meme. It would do a lot more damage to the scammers posing as agents if it did – the more of us who blog about scammers posing as agents, the better. The more we educate the naive and innocent and prevent them from falling into the traps of scammers, the better.
So here’s the challenge to all y’all writers who know that it’s a bad idea to pay an "agent" an upfront fee or to hire a book doctor or editor who the "agent" recommends. Blog about the rest of the agents on the top twenty scummy agents list. Always link back to either the Making Light post, the SFWA’s beware site, the top twenty list, the top twenty list site, the Absolute Write bewares forum, or all of the above.
For that matter, blog about any other scummy agents as well. Blog about scummy practices as well as what’s normal and acceptable business practice in the publishing world.
Spread the news far and wide. Educate the public.
We want the scummy scammers to go broke. Together, we can make it happen.
