The forums at Absolute Write are currently down. Oh no!
Well, let’s be honest, the entire site is currently down. Why?
I found my first bit of info from Dawno, also of AW, who referred me to another post made by Teresa Nielson Hayden over at Making Light, who talks about Barbara Bauer, a scammer posing as an agent, who, it would seem, made one telephone call to company that hosted AW to complain about an email addy posted in a forum message, despite email addy being long since removed. The hosting company then panicked and put AW’s site down. With one hours notice.
Nice.
Coincidentally, the hosting company is owned by a woman who published with PublishAmerica. PublishAmerica, if you don’t know, is a scamming vanity press that makes its authors think they’re a legit publishing company when they’re not.
But that’s a whole other story.
Back to Barbara Bauer. She apparently is cranky enough that she’ll pull all sorts of wacko stunts, but that probably goes with the territory of being a scammer.
Anyway, if you love Absolute Write, and especially if you love the Absolute Write forums, it’ll be back. Have no fear on that score. Meanwhile, consider GoogleBombing Barbara Bauer.
For fun. And cuz it’s worth it.
And if you don’t, and you’re a writer, have you not checked them out? If you haven’t, you should. So do it. But not now – give it 24-48 hours for Jenna, the owner to find a host and get everything set up again.
